How do I adjust the video settings on my Arlo Essential Video Doorbell?

You can use the Arlo app to adjust brightness, auto HDR, night vision, and video resolution on your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell.

Note: Changes to these settings take effect on the next video stream or motion recording, after the change was made.

To adjust video settings on your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell:

  1. Launch the Arlo app or log in to
  2. Tap or click Settings > My Devices.
  3. Select your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell.
Note: You can also open the doorbell’s settings by tapping or clicking the Settings icon on the Devices page.
  4. Tap or click Video Settings.
  5. Adjust the video settings:
    1. Brightness. Move the slider to increase or decrease the video brightness.
    2. Auto HDR. Tap or click to toggle automatic high dynamic range (HDR) on and off.
Note: HDR improves image quality in high-contrast settings, such as scenes with both dark and bright areas. Auto HDR is turned on by default. When auto HDR is on, your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell determines when to activate HDR.
    3. Night Vision. Tap or click to toggle night vision on and off.
Note: When night vision is on, the doorbell camera automatically turns on infrared (IR) LEDs to record in low-light conditions. We recommend that you leave night vision turned on unless the camera is facing reflective surfaces, such as windows.
    4. Video Quality. Tap or click to change the doorbell’s resolution to 1536x1536, 1080x1080, or 720x720.
Note: Higher video quality uses more of your Internet bandwidth. For the best experience with your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell, we recommend a minimum upload speed of 2Mbps.
