How do I use the transformer that came with my Arlo Video Doorbell?

Last updated: 08.01.2025

When you purchase a wired Arlo Video Doorbell in Europe, you receive a doorbell transformer in the box.

  • The doorbell transformer is 24V AC and is meant to replace your existing doorbell transformer.
  • This is because many doorbell transformers in Europe are 12V AC, which does not provide enough power for your wired Arlo Video Doorbell.

Install the transformer

The included doorbell transformer must be installed if your existing doorbell transformer is not between 16-24V AC.

If your existing doorbell transformer is not between 16-24V AC, you must call a qualified electrician to install the doorbell transformer that came in the box with your wired Arlo Video Doorbell.

  • Arlo does not recommend that you install the doorbell transformer yourself.

After installing the transformer

After the doorbell transformer is installed, your existing doorbell chime should no longer be used if it is not rated for 24V AC.

  • If your existing chime was rated for operation with a 12V AC doorbell transformer only, then you must enable bypass mode on your Arlo Power Kit to prevent the doorbell from improperly ringing or damaging your chime.
  • To enable bypass mode, move the switch on your Arlo Power Kit to Bypass Mode, marked by the X on the Power Kit.
  • After enabling bypass mode, you must turn off the traditional chime setting in the Arlo Secure App.

To turn off the traditional chime setting in the Arlo Secure App:

For the Arlo Secure App with Feed:

  1. Launch the Arlo Secure App.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Select your wired Arlo Video Doorbell.
  4. Tap
  5. Tap Chime Settings.
  6. Tap Traditional Chime.
  7. Tap None.

For the Arlo Secure App with Library:

  1. Launch the Arlo Secure App.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap My Devices.
  4. Select your wired Arlo Video Doorbell.
  5. Tap Traditional Chime.
  6. Tap None.

Using an Arlo Chime

Because you bypassed your existing doorbell chime, your doorbell will not create a traditional ring when your wired Arlo Video Doorbell button is pressed.

  • If you still want to hear an audible ring when someone presses your wired Arlo Video Doorbell button, you can install an Arlo Chime.
  • Alternatively, you can consult an electrician to replace your doorbell chime with a chime that is compatible with your 24V AC doorbell transformer.

Note: You will still receive doorbell calls on your mobile device when someone presses your wired Arlo Video Doorbell button, even if your doorbell chime is bypassed.
