How do I update the firmware on my Arlo Security Light system?

When you first add the Arlo Bridge to your Arlo account, the Arlo app checks for firmware updates. If a bridge firmware update is available, the bridge updates itself before you can proceed to the next step. During the update process, the bridge’s status LED goes through several blinking color transitions while the bridge updates, restarts, and connects to the Internet again. The Arlo app screen displays a confirmation if the update succeeds or an option to retry if it fails.

Do not unplug the Arlo Bridge while a firmware update is in progress. Do not unplug the Arlo Security Light or remove the battery while a firmware update is in progress.

During regular use, Arlo Bridge and Arlo Security Light firmware updates are scheduled to happen automatically between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Updates happen during the day so that they don’t interfere with normal night-time usage. If a firmware update fails, Arlo tries to update the device again the next day during the same time window.

Firmware update failure is usually caused by poor connection quality. If an update fails, try the following:

  • Make sure that your bridge’s WiFi connection is strong.
  • Make sure that your WiFi network is not congested—for example, make sure that you are not streaming media on multiple devices, downloading or uploading large files, or performing other bandwidth-intensive tasks.
  • Make sure that your light is within range of your bridge.
