What are Arlo Activity Zones and how do I create them?
Last updated: 08.01.2025
An Activity Zone focuses motion detection on a specific area within your camera’s field of view. When your Arlo camera detects motion, it determines whether the motion occurred within the Activity Zone that you created. If motion is detected within an Activity Zone, the Arlo Secure App notifies you, and the recording is uploaded to your video feed.
How do Activity Zones affect video recording?
When Activity Zones are configured, and motion is detected by your camera, the camera will begin recording video. The video is analyzed to determine if the activity is within the frame of the Activity Zones. If Smart filters are enabled, the video will also be analyzed to determine what filters are applicable. Videos that are within the Activity Zones and pass the filters will be saved in your Feed, and a notification will be sent, depending on your Modes and Rules setup. Videos with motion outside of the Activity Zone, or filtered by Smart filters are not saved, and no notification is sent.
- Note: If Local Storage is in use, all videos will be saved regardless of whether the activity is in the zone or not.
Set up Activity Zones:
Depending on your camera model, you can create up to three or five Activity Zones per camera, with four or eight anchor points to determine the size and shape of the zone.
Note: If you are creating an Activity Zone for a camera that is compatible with Auto Zoom and Tracking, ensure that Auto Zoom and Tracking is turned off. Activity Zones can be impacted when Auto Zoom and Tracking is enabled. For more information, visit: What is Arlo Auto Zoom and Tracking and how do I use it?
