Most Arlo devices detect motion using passive infrared (PIR). Indoor cameras such as Arlo Q, Arlo Q Plus, Arlo Baby, and Arlo Essential Indoor Series use pixel based, frame-by-frame motion detection. Pro 3, Pro 4, and Pro 5S cameras will use pixel based detection when connected to a power adapter, as will Pro 3 Floodlight when connected to an outdoor power adapter.
Passive Infrared (PIR)
Passive infrared detects changes in heat. Arlo devices trigger when the infrared technology detects an object that is warmer than the surrounding environment. The motion sensor is more sensitive to side-to-side movement across its field of view than to movement directly toward or away from it.
Pixel Based (Frame-by-Frame)
Pixel based motion detection technology analyzes changes in video frames to trigger motion detection alerts and recordings. The number of pixels analyzed depends on your motion sensitivity settings.
To avoid unwanted motion detection on Arlo devices:
Mount devices to stable objects.
- If an Arlo device moves from wind or other weather events, it can trigger motion detection.
- Avoid mounting Arlo devices in areas where high winds are likely.
Avoid mounting Arlo devices in areas where temperatures fluctuate drastically.
- Clouds and shadows may trigger motion detection due to temperature differences between them and areas of intense sunlight.
Avoid placing Arlo cameras where sunlight shines directly into the camera lens.
- If possible, try facing cameras in a south or north direction.
Avoid facing Arlo devices toward trees and plants that sway in the wind or trap heat.
- Heat can become temporarily trapped in trees and plants during sundown and increase the possibility of unwanted motion triggers.
Use Activity Zones.
- Activity Zones allow you to focus the Arlo camera motion detection on a specific area to trigger snapshots or video recording.
